Easing back pain with a seat cushion

The back is a complicated structure of bones, joints, ligaments and muscles, where any issues with these components can lead to the development of low back pain.

Low back pain is a very common health problem worldwide which may affect performance at work and play, and have detrimental effects on your general well-being. The causes and onset of low back pain often remain obscure and diagnosis difficult to make.

Your posture in a normal seat is important to note, as the weight of your entire body pushes down on your tailbone and results in pressure, which leads to back pain, as well as having other potential effects on the rest of your body, such as sciatica, which is the biggest nerve in your body, running from your lower back, through your buttock, hamstring, into the lower leg.

Deterioration of the inter-vertebral is prevalent in adults aged 35-55 due to poor posture with a 60%-70% estimated suffering from low back pain.

A lot of professionals may offer advice to effectively reduce back pain, including manual therapies such as Remedial Massage; exercise prescription, medication and in extreme circumstances surgery.

If you have noticed you are feeling lower back pain or sciatic symptoms before you get overwhelmed, may I start by suggesting the use of an orthopedic seat cushion, which helps to take the pressure and strain off the coccyx bone as well as helping to align the hips which has a flow on effect, including pain relief in many cases.

With the right awareness and a proactive approach, using a seat cushion can help to realign your spine over time, as you are sitting correctly you are recruiting more stabilizing muscles which will strengthen and become re-trained to hold you in better posture.

Using a seat cushion, which can be placed on office chairs, dining chairs, car seats and can be taken along on pubic transport, you’ll reduce spinal pressure, due to the design preventing the tailbone from touching the seat and distributing the weight evenly on the surface.

We advise using a seat cushion which has been designed based on medically proven concepts that help in reducing spinal pressure and lower back pain, and are made from high density a-grade memory foam which are hypoallergenic made from natural latex and do not compress or get flattened even after years of use.

Another option for many people is to use a lumbar support cushion in combination with the seat cushion or on its own, depending on your posture and where you feel you need the added support.

Of course nothing can replace exercise, movement therapy, physical therapies and so on, however an orthopedic seat cushion just may take the edge off allowing you to get on with your day without the need for medication or excessive trips to your healthcare professional.
